RICK MYTHIASIN: 'STEEL PROPHET's Songwriting Was Boring'
December 11, 2002Vocalist Rick Mythiasin has spoken out about his decision to leave STEEL PROPHET and concentrate completely on his German/American band TARAXACUM.
In an interview posted on the TARAXACUM web site, Mythiasin revealed his reasons for exiting his previous band on the eve of the release of their latest CD, "Unseen".
"To make a long story short, I quit STEEL PROPHET 'cause I wanted to be myself, and have more creative input," the singer explained. "I was restricted, didn't like being held back. To me, the songwriting was really boring. [guitarist] Steve [Kachinsky] didn't let the other musicians in the band have a crack at writing. Even if we did write he would make the final arrangement, so it was never a group effort. We just grew tired of working with each other. The creative spark died the minute he started telling me how to sing. Let's set the story straight. He is running around telling everyone how I was fired from STEEL PROPHET. The fact is I quit. He is still trying to be in control. He's really upset that I quit on my own terms and that he didn't get the chance to fire me like I know he wanted to. Now I can focus all my energy on TARAXACUM. There is team work! I get a say-so. It's cool working with German musicians. You know, it won't be long until I get on their nerves too."
TARAXACUM, Mythiasin's collaboration with founder and EDGUY bassist Tobias Exxel, drummer Franky Wolf and keyboardist Ferdy Doernberg, are currently writing songs for their as-yet-untitled second album, due in late summer through MTM-Metal Records.
"At the moment we are working on eight songs," Rick revealed. "We can't give song titles yet. We have arrangements and lyrics down. Now were just working on melodies and fine-tuning everything. We have been working between Franky's and Rick's home studios. Crisscrossing the Atlantic. We think we have a lot of straight forward rock and metal songs, as well as a few ballads and a real Mandolin choir. Lyrics are gonna be more serious and focused this time. There will be themes that everyone can relate to. There are a lot of political themes as well as some personal experiences."
